June and July at GCUUF...

Sunday, June 22, Angels. Join us for a service about Unitarian Universalism and those creatures that can fly because they take themselves lightly!! The message is from a sermon by the Rev. Earl K. Holt.

Sunday, June 29, Getting Serious About Unitarian Universalism.
This week’s service is about the promise of Unitarian Universalists and how we can answer that call.

Sunday, July 6,
Truth and Reconciliation in Mississippi. Rev. Susan Karlson

I recently took a trip to Natchez and visited the African American Museum there. I listened spellbound for well over an hour to the glorious moments won by African Americans and their many historic accomplishments in Mississippi . That was rounded out by the long grueling story of racism in this state. I walked on the ground of the second largest slave auction block in this country. How do we help to tell the whole story of racism and race relations in this state and our country? How do we act as advocates for reconciliation, truth and justice?

First Sunday potluck follows the service.

Sunday, July 13, One More Step, Rev. Susan Karlson

Unitarian Universalist Joyce Poley wrote the song, One More Step in 1986 for the Unitarian Universalist Peace Network. On this Sunday, we’ll explore what "one more step" means for this Fellowship almost three years after Katrina. What are the next steps in your evolution as a Unitarian Universalist congregation? Where do you want to go in the years ahead?

We’ll hold a picnic in Bayou View Park right behind the Fellowship after the service. (See "Upcoming Programs and Events" for more information)
Sunday, July 20, Loose-Leaf Bible, Rev. Doak Mansfield

The Church of the Larger Fellowship (CLF)

Visit the CLF home page and light the digital chalice. Here's this month's Global Chalice Lighting from the International council of Unitarian Universalists:

Our fellowship of freedom shares with the ancient Hebrews a sense of
covenant toward a land of promise. Our fellowship shares with the
philosophers of Greece a continuing discussion towards truth. Our
fellowship cherishes the spirit of Jesus, "Thou shalt love thy
neighbour as thyself." Our fellowship cherishes the Reformation
spirit, "Everyone shall be a priest."
We keep the faith of Francis David of Transylvania, "You need not
think alike to love alike." We keep the faith of English and American
prophets who struggled against the slavery of body and brain. We seek
the tender compassion of sages in India who held in all things a
reverence for life. We seek the serenity and balance found in the
meditation of China and Japan.
Conscious of sacrifices that are the price of freedom, conscious of
the continuing threat to life and liberty, we commit ourselves in this
community as pilgrims who seek, as persons who serve, as pioneers who
build.
-- Rev. Richard Boeke, British General Assembly of Unitarian and Free
Christian Churches

June Services and Events
Sunday, June 8, our service topic will be Dwelling in the House of Spirit--a reflection inspired by a reading of Sarah Ban Breathnach from her book "Something More--Excavating Your Authentic Self.  Sarah writes how we create safe havens, places to celebrate "authentic joys", rooms set aside for many purposes.  Come and share in an exploration of our many rooms.

Wednesday, June 11, will be our final Spirit of Life class. We hope you'll join us as we end this time of exploring Unitarian Universalist spirituality.

Hope to see you there!

Meet Reverend Dr. Marie DeYoung...

Welcome to the Gulf Coast UU Fellowship!

Rev. Richard Gilbert once wrote that a strong UU congregation is built on four pillars: worship, community, lifespan religious education, and service. Whenever I have worked with congregations – as the parish minister on Martha’s Vineyard, as a lay leader on various UU social justice committees, and as a U.S. Army Chaplain who was pastor, chaplain and music leader for various Christian and Gospel Congregations in the Army -- I have worked to build these strong congregational pillars. Why? Because I know that a healthy community needs all of these supports not only to keep the church healthy, but to renew the spirit and the vitality of all its members.

We’ve just begun our time together. Our year started with two major hurricanes: Gustav and Ike. Thankfully, our members took all precautions to be safe, and when it was safe to return to worship, we joined for fellowship on September 6. Our sanctuary was not touched by Gustav. Ike left us alone, too, although his path left many of us unnerved for a few days.

Now, it is time to roll up our sleeves, and get about the business of building our fellowship. It is my hope that we will spend the year together joyfully building all four of Rev. Gilbert’s congregational pillars tall enough and strong enough to withstand the storms and squalls that are thrust upon us by nature - or by circumstances that we may encounter.

This is a wonderful time to be a Unitarian Universalist. Our faith is rich with meaning and possibility. As we sing and worship together, we can celebrate our heritage as well as hope for a bright future for our fellowship. We are as American as pecan pie and as mainstream in our connection to American History as Thomas Jefferson, John and Abigail Adams and a host of men and women who served their communities by feeding the hungry, nursing the sick, educating our youth, and supporting institutions that are vital to our nation’s economy, our security, and our freedom.

If you want to grow in your faith, and if you are on a quest to deepen the meaning of your life, come and be a part of our UU Gulf Coast Fellowship. Join us as we worship, work, and grow together.

Peace and Blessings,

Rev. Dr. Marie E. deYoung
