The Soul: The Silent Labyrinth Walk
Richmond UUs came to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to help families rebuild
their homes. We fellowshipped on Wednesday evening, and together, we lay the stones for our labyrinth. We celebrated
this milestone in rebuilding our faith community by sharing our first Labyrinth Walk with our friends from Richmond.
And then, we broke bread together on the land where we will build our church. The stones used to build our labyrinth are a lovely celtic green stone, donated by Mike Kayes in honor of his
late wife, Christine, and other UUs who contributed to the life of our Gulf Coast UU Fellowship. As Mike said, "Christine was the born UU in
our family with a lifelong commitment to UU principles. We joined the GCIUUF in 1977. She served as president and vice president
at various times over the years and was the president of the fellowship when the firebombing occurred in 1979.
She died of cancer in August 2005 shortly after Katarina. While not overtly expressing her religious views while teaching
at Long Beach High School, She lived her principles every day and led by example and as such was a good ambassador of our
faith. Her experiences with the UU Camp at Star Island influenced her to insist we become Charter Life Members of the
Highland Camp and Conference Center in Highlands NC. Our children spent summer camp there." Our
members enjoy the serenity on our land as they walk the labyrinth to center their souls. The habitat surrounding
our new labyrinth helps us to be mindful of the goodness of creation.
